Appliance Standards

Appliance and equipment standards set minimum energy and/or water efficiency requirements for the sale of specific products. Typically, appliance and equipment standards are first passed at the state level, and after a number of states adopt similar standards, industry groups will often lobby for national standards which are usually preferable to a patchwork of state requirements. Many appliances are now covered by national standards, which apply to products manufactured or imported into the U.S., but states still have the option to pass stricter requirements for products sold within its borders. Over time, these standards are updated to reflect new technologies and energy efficiency targets.
