Michigan

Michigan passed an ambitious climate and energy package in 2023, requiring 60% renewable energy and 80% clean energy by 2035, and 100% clean energy by 2040. Although emissions decreased 23% from 2005-2021, the state is ranked 10th in the country for total emissions, partly due to a high population, cold winters, and a major vehicle manufacturing industry. Almost half of in-state electricity generation is from natural gas, which is declining in production, and nuclear and renewables make up around 35%.
