Montana
Montana has rich fossil fuel and renewable energy resources, with both the largest recoverable coal reserves and some of the best wind resources in the nation. Around half of in-state electricity generation is from renewables, complemented almost entirely by coal; the state accounts for around 5% of total U.S. coal production and exports 60% of in-state coal. While emissions decreased by 8% from 2005-2021, they are roughly the same as 1990 emissions levels.
