South Dakota

South Dakota’s primary industry is agriculture, with the state ranking 5th in the country for farmland coverage and producing 9% of the country’s ethanol. In-state electricity generation tripled from 2007-2022, the overwhelming majority of which comes from renewables — over half of total generation comes from wind alone. With one of the smallest populations in the country, energy-intensive industries, and significant seasonal temperature variability, the state ranks 8th in the country for energy consumption per capita and 9th for petroleum use per capita.
